We are pleased to welcome koldsleep, a Korean artist collective, for a special public lecture \u201cThe State of Performance Art and Personal Narratives: \u2018Chain\u2019 Project and Archive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

koldsleep was formed in 2020 resulting from the director Kim Mihyun\u2019s chronic insomnia, in the Gangbuk District of Seoul, South Korea. The collective works on art projects that bring forth narratives about women and minorities, imagining a weightless space while avoiding the influence of existing forms and genres.<\/span><\/p>\n

Using \u201cdreams\u201d as a theme, koldsleep has held \u201cTwo-Person Phantom Limb \u2013 Chain of Rings (<\/span>\u4e8c\u4eba\u5e7b\u811a \u9023\u9396\u306e\u8f2a<\/span>) : Find a Channelhead\u201d a late-night, immersive and participation-based style performance since 2021. Other works that involve audience-participation include \u201cA Musical Instrument Novel\u201d (2022), a compilation of the voices of 54 people; \u201cSuspicious Happiness Operation Group\u201d (2022), which made use of an original card game; \u201cA Letter to Write for Yourself\u201d (2022), a workshop where young women spoke about \u201chappiness\u201d; \u201cHeterotopia\u201d (2023), an exploration of a theater at midnight with flashlights while getting \u201csleep,\u201d and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through koldsleep\u2019s artistic practice and works, this lecture will discuss art as a medium for sharing private time and experiences, the interdependent communication between audience and performer, and the ethics and dilemmas of archiving experiences with an audience. Additionally, the curatorial collective the ghost project will present \u201c100 monogatari,\u201d a collection of 99 stories by artists from around the world to visualize violence in social structures (<\/span>Grant : <\/span>The collaborative research project “Art and Gender” by Mizuho Financial Group \u00d7 Center for Curatorial Studies, Tokyo Geidai) <\/span>\u201c100 kiyako,\u201d a banquet to be held by the ghost project and koldsleep, to be held on November 1, will also be presented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through performances based on minority narratives, they have created moments where participants \u201cwitness\u201d each other. During the temporary promise of being \u201cin performance,\u201d the audiences create cracks in the world around them, shaping new narratives with their own bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cho Hyesu
\n<\/span>Independent curator based in Japan and South Korea. Organizer of the ghost project. She has presented exhibitions, art projects, and writing from a feminist perspective while crossing literature and art. Cho has been working as a curator since 2016. Her recent projects include \u201c2024 the ghost project\u2014\u2014100 monogatari \u00d7 100 kiyakou\u201d (2024); \u201cKitchen Across the Ocean: SIKGU\u201d (2023); \u201cVirtual Body: Presence and Absence in Media\u201d (2022); \u201c!Two Weeks Notice!\u201d (2020), among others. She has acted as an exhibition and planning member of international and regional art events and festivals, including coordinator of the 2020 Busan Biennale and assistant curator of the 2022 Gangneung International Art Festival. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the Graduate School of Global Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
