As a part of Professor Yuko Hasegawa\u2019s course \u201cArts Studies and Curatorial Practices Seminar,\u201d an exhibition curated by five students majoring in Curation of GA will be held, from March 21 to April 7, at the Chinretsukan Gallery, Tokyo University of the Arts. Titled Count the Waves: Visualizing Invisibility, the exhibition invites 14 artists and designer from in and outside Japan to investigate invisibility. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, March 20 from 7:30 p.m. at Oura Shokudo, Department of Fine Arts, Ueno Campus (DJ program included). For both, no reservations required, admission free. All are welcome.<\/p>\n

\nConcept:<\/strong>
\nThe title Count the Waves expresses an attempt to grasp the invisible or unknowable \u2014like waves that ceaselessly layer one over the other, only to dissipate\u2014 alluding not only to the impenetrable depths of the sea, but to the forces that rule it. For example: to have an online presence is to be both anonymous and hyper-visible. Yet even as the demarcations between physical and digital identity become blurred, the emotional, temporal (i.e. past\/future\/memory), and intangible (i.e. unmanifested) realities of human existence are rendered invisible in both “real” and online realms. In presenting artworks that visualize the invisible, this exhibition will explore where we see (or think we see) traces of the invisible in its paradoxically visible manifestations. By interrogating how varying forms of invisibility have shifted how we relate to our surrounding environments, we aim to seek out what it truly means to “connect.”<\/p>\n
