\u201cIntroduction to Art and Culture in the Global Age\u201d is a series of special lectures organised by the Graduate school of Global Arts. In this course we invite specialist from around the world to give lectures and workshops. Hosted by Arts Management and Cultural Policy field, this time we welcome Prof. Kenneth Foster, Director of Arts Leadership,\u00a0the University of Southern California, with a lecture “Creating Sustainable Arts Organizations.“<\/em><\/p>\n

Lecture: \u201cCreating Sustainable Arts Organizations\u201d<\/h3>\n

By Professor Kenneth Foster, Director, Arts Leadership,\u00a0the University of Southern California<\/p>\n

The changes occurring in the contemporary world present today\u2019s arts organizations with unanticipated challenges. Based on his more than thirty years of experience leading nonprofit\u00a0 arts organizations, and drawn from his recent book, Arts Leadership; Creating Sustainable Arts Organizations<\/em>, Professor Foster discusses the contours of global change which demand organizational transformation. He proposes a unique organizational construct and methodology by which arts organizations can become sustainable entities, operating in alignment\u00a0with the external environment and foregrounding their commitment to art and the artistic process.<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Kenneth Foster is Professor of Practice in the Thornton School of Music and Director of Arts Leadership at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. Before joining the faculty of USC, he was executive director of San Francisco\u2019s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) for ten years. The organization thrived under his leadership, benefittin
\ng from his dedication to nurturing long-term relationships with artists, growing YBCA\u2019s audience and establishing the Center as an international leader in the contemporary arts.
\nProf. Foster has more than 30 years of experience as an arts administrator, curator, educator, and performing arts presenter at Millikin University, Penn State University and the University of Arizona in addition to YBCA and has served in leadership roles for several national arts service organizations. He is the author of two books: Performing Arts Presenting; From Theory to Practice (2001) and Arts Leadership; Creating Sustainable Arts Organizations (2018). He was a Founding Member of the Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium and consults regularly with arts organizations around the world on issues of leadership, organizational design and sustainability in the performing arts.<\/p>\n
